The Government of Poland has requested funding to increase access to flood protection for people living in selected areas of the Odra River and the Upper Vistula River basins and to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Borrower to mitigate the impact of floods more effectively. The large-scale project will improve flood protection through selected structural gray measures, as well as green measures, institutional strengthening and enhance forecasting. Green measures will include opening space for the river to inundate the natural floodplain, while also diminishing flood velocities. The population of the regions in the direct proximity of both gray and green measures is estimated to be about 15.1 million. A total of 122,042 people of which are currently living in the actual flood zones of the 1-in-100 year floods and will receive full or improved physical protection benefit.
