The Government of the Brazilian State Espírito Santo has requested World Bank funds for the Espírito Santo Integrated Sustainable Water Management Project with the objectives to: (a) improve sustainable water resources management; and (b) increase access to sanitation in the project area. The project aims at strengthening the state’s water sector institutions, providing increased wastewater collection and treatment services, supporting reforestation and sustainable land management practices, and improving the state's capacity to identify, monitor and prepare for disaster risks. Nature-based solutions are employed to reduce flooding and erosion within the wider remit of a watershed management component. The project has strengthened the state's capacity in implementing the Reflorestar Program through the Mangarai River Pilot aimed at reducing sediment load originating in the Mangarai River sub-watershed.
