The Government of Mozambique has obtained funding for the Mozambique Cities and Climate Change Project from the Strategic Climate Fund with the objective to increase the resilience of the city of Beira to floods by improving and safeguarding the natural drainage capacity of the Chiveve river. The city of Beira is considered to be the most exposed to current and future climate risks in Mozambique, with rising sea levels and severe erosion taking place along its coastline adjacent. Along the use of traditional "gray" infrastructure, such as canals, the project also expanded the 17-hectare, multi-functional urban green park along the Chiveve river to reduce urban flooding. This has included the restoration of the Chiveve River’s stormwater drainage and retention function. It will also include an increase in the number of recreational and public spaces in Beira, which are quite limited, by constructing pedestrian routes, events venues, a local market, and other community areas alongside the river.
