The objective of the project “Natural Resource Management in a Changing Climate in Mali” is to expand the adoption of sustainable land and water management (SLWM) practices in climate vulnerable targeted communes in Mali. The Government of Mali aims to achieve this through the implementation of capacity building, biodiversity conservation, and support to poverty reduction activities applying an ecosystem-based adaptation approach. This approach will enable project beneficiaries in 14 communities across three provinces to adapt to climate change and ultimately to increase their resilience.

Combined, the engineered and nature-based measures (mangroves) have protected 1.37 kilometers of coastline (above the baseline) for a total of 1.87 kilometers28, exceeding both the revised PDO-level target of 1.2 kilometers and the original target of 1.6 kilometers. Community-based mangrove management plans have been prepared and adopted under the village development committees and are being implemented to ensure the sustainability of the coastal protection measures on the outer islands. Mangrove as NBS also noted as protecting water suplies from saltwater instrusion.

The project was comprehensive, using insitutional capacity building and awareness raising of SLM for DRM, using community-based activities to restore and sustainably manage areas such as the restoration of natural waterways, reforestation of hillsides and watersheds and bush fire control (Savanna, Maritime and Kara regions).
