The objective of the Kiribati Adaptaion Program was to improve the resilience of Kiribati to the impacts of climate change on freshwater supply and coastal infrastructure. The project's engineered and nature-based measures (mangroves) have together protected 1.37 kilometers of coastline (above the baseline) for a total of 1.87 kilometers. School visits, teachers and students took care of mangroves used. Community-based mangrove management plans have also been prepared and adopted under the village development committees and are being implemented to ensure the sustainability of the coastal protection measures on the outer islands. Mangroves as nature-based approaches were also noted to protect the water supply from saltwater instrusion.
